Why This Skill Is in Demand

COBOL still powers critical banking, insurance, and government systems that cannot be easily replaced. Organizations need specialists who can maintain, troubleshoot, and gradually modernize these platforms.

AI can assist with code translation, documentation, and impact analysis, but production COBOL systems require careful human oversight. The scarcity of expertise may make AI a productivity booster rather than a replacement.

Future Outlook

15+ yearsestimated market relevance

The pool of experienced COBOL talent is shrinking, which supports compensation and job security for those who have it. Over time, demand may narrow but remain durable in mission-critical environments.
